Callowell Primary School

Reading

Reading is such an important part of schooling that we make it a high priority at Callowell.

We use the Oxford Reading Tree which we supplement with Big Cat Collins and a variety of other modern and classic literature for our 'Free Readers'

How do we teach Phonics & Reading at Callowell?

At present, we follow  Letters and Sounds. In accordance with the Government's recent announcement on Letters and Sounds, despite high Phonics screening results and performing well above the national average in reading, we are encouraged to change to a full, validated Phonics scheme. We will be publishing more information on this when we have decided on a full scheme from the validated list.

Our Reading Lead compiles newsletters to support teaching your child to read which you can view here. They are also on the Class Dojo.

Each class in the school has a book corner where children are given time to explore both fiction and non fiction.

Please see some of the photos below of our reading corners...

Children at Callowell have had the opportunity to meet and write to authors.

Please see images below showing our recent communications with Christopher Edge, Katherine Rundell, Robin Stevens and Michael Rosen.

In Autumn 2021, we also got to 'virtually meet' Jeff Kinney, Jacqueline Wilson, Maddie Moate and Nick Sharratt.
