Beech Class (Year 2)

Summer 1: In Beech class, we are learning about Jamaica. We are going to be writing setting descriptions, recounts and innovating poems in English which are all linked to our theme books. In Maths, we are beginning to explore Statistics as well as learning about Capacity and Temperature. In other subjects, we are going to be exploring Jamaica's physical and human landscapes and how these compare to the UK. Jamaican culture has inspired our DT this term - Jamaican Vegetable Soup. We will be exploring the ingredients often used in Jamaican cuisine as well as developing our chopping, peeling and grating skills. In Science, we are looking at living things and their habitats. We will look closely at how animals have adapted to live in their habitats and micro-habitats.

Summer 2: In the second half of the summer term, we are continuing to extend our knowledge of Jamaica. We are going to be writing innovations of a story, non-chronological reports about Jamaica and  performance poems in English which are all linked to our theme books. In Maths, we are revising and consolidating our knowledge of all the maths we have learnt this year. In other subjects, we are going to be exploring the lives of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole and understanding the impact that their work had on people's lives. In Art, we will be looking closely at the work of Jamaican artist, Gloria Escoffery. We will use our knowledge of colour mixing and tone work to create painted pictures in the style of her work. In Science, we are learning about plants, having lots of opportunity to watch how they grow, experiment with conditions to see what plants need to stay healthy and learn about the different parts of a plant.
