What does PSHE look like at Callowell?
At Callowell Primary School, PSHE is taught consistently every week, using the ‘Jigsaw’ programme. The Jigsaw Scheme, focuses on children learning to understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. This whole school programme brings together PSHE Education, statutory Relationships and Health Education, emotional literacy, building resilience, social skills, spiritual development, and opportunities to learn mindfulness techniques.
The Jigsaw programme is a whole school approach that is progressive, with all year groups focusing upon the same themed unit (puzzle) each half term, as outlined below. The puzzles (units) and lessons are sequenced so that new knowledge and skills revisit and build upon prior learning, extending their knowledge by adding new concepts, knowledge and skills.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children engage with PSHE through the Early Goal 'Personal, Social and Emotional Development,' supported by the Jigsaw scheme. Within this Early Learning Goal, children will gain the confidence to manage themself, build relationships and show an understanding of their own feelings.
At Callowell, we have a range of established links within our local community that we draw upon to enhance learning as well as ensuring PSHE is present outside of the curriculum in the everyday ethos of the school, through our school values and golden rules, as well as through opportunities for children to share their voice, such as school council roles. To ensure children are provided with a broad cultural development we also provide them with opportunities to extend their learning beyond our local community. Learning experiences include: trips, workshops, expert visitors, assemblies, connections with external agencies and celebrations of local and national events, such as Antibullying week.
Our school has links with the Trailblazers programme which allows us to make referrals and work closely with Mental Health Professionals to support children who are struggling. In the summer of 2022, we earned our GHLL Healthy Schools Award which acknowledged the work we had undertaken to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of all of our children.
How do we assess PSHE?
Our PSHE curriculum is designed progressively to ensure that children build on previous knowledge and skills learnt and form connections between the units. We use regular retrieval practice sessions within class to further support this.
Class teachers use formative assessment in all lessons to identify children's understanding of the PSHE concepts and key knowledge taught, alongside Evidence Me and Insight. This allows us to track the attainment and progress of children throughout their school journey.
