Callowell Linguists
Our Aims:
Our MFL curriculum is designed to encourage children to develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, develop an understanding of other cultures and the world around them, as well as creating an enthusiasm to become life-long language learners.
Our aims are to ensure all of our pupils:
- understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
- speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronounciation and intonation.
- can write at varying length, for different puposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
- discover and develop an appreciatio of a range of writing in the language studied.
What does MFL look like at Callowell?
Our MFL curriculum, currently supported by Language Angels, is based on the aims and principles of the national curriculum. We use Language Angels to ensure that we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics.
Within each aspect of MFL, there is a focus upon four key language learning skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as grammar rules and patterns. This enables pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning.
Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics, building blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language.
How do we assess MFL?
Our MFL curriculum is designed progressively to ensure that children in KS2 build on previously learnt knowledge and form connections between skills and knowledge taught. We use regular retrieval practice sessions within class to further support this.
Class teachers use formative assessment in all lessons to identify children's understanding of the key knowledge and skills taught in MFL lessons, alongside Insight. This allows us to track the attainment and progress of children throughout their school journey.
